Gerard Sekoto - Lesley Spiro

Gerard Sekoto: Unsevered Ties by Lesley Spiro is a catalogue of a retrospective exhibition.

"A mythical figure to many, having lived in Paris for four decades, Sekoto has only in recent years received the recognition that he deserves which began with the pioneering work of Barbara Lindop. The decision to show Sekoto's remarkable contribution to South African art comes at an important time in the history of art in this country. The interest awakened in Sekoto needs to be fully developed by placing him within the context of this new art history which is developing from the growing awareness of the omissions of the past. The exhibition and this catalogue are testaments to an era, and to the achievement of Sekoto as an artist working within an environment which offered scant support and recognition. This retrospective exhibition of the work of an artist whose roots are in this country represents the spiritual return of Gerard Sekoto to South Africa.
