The Adversary Within: Dissident Writers In Afrikaans by Jack Cope is the story of how writers who pioneered the literary use of Afrikaans at the beginning of this century were and still are regarded as national heroes. Over the past 40 years the Afrikaner people have assumed political power and have become the ruling minority in South Africa, but the foremost creative writers in Afrikaans today are often castigated by the establishment and run the risk of censorship and banning of their work under the provisions of the Publications Act.
